Kinetic Sculpture                   Course: Art 3850                   Section: 02

Instructor:  Visiting Artist / Assistant Professor Karin Hodgin Jones

Meet:  3:00 – 4:50 Tu / Th

Location:  VAS room 10

Office:  Hunt House 1st Floor

Office Hours:  By appointment

Course Overview:

This class will focus on skills, techniques and concepts for making kinetic sculpture.  In this course, we will look at the historical contexts of kinetic sculpture and move from the production of simple machines to creating objects that demonstrate behavioral movement.  We will explore methods of powering objects from the human body to wind, sun and grid electricity.  We will also explore sensors and sensing devices as a method of producing a behavior or response in the constructed objects.

My goals:

My role in our community will be to facilitate your engagement with materials, your peers and best methods for communicating through materials.  I will present you with a series of exercises that will improve your skills in precision construction of mechanical devices as a foundation for the course.  Beyond the acquisition of skills, I will present you with dilemmas that will introduce ways of approaching making that you may not have experienced before.  The assignments will be designed by me but I encourage you to find creative interpretations of the framework I provide.   My enthusiasm is guaranteed.

Attendance policy:

- 3 unexcused absences will result in a 5% reduction in your final grade.

- 4 unexcused absences will result in a 10% reduction in your final grade.

- MORE THAN 5 ABSENCES will result in a FAILING GRADE for the course.

- It is vitally important that everyone makes the best use of the facilities for their own success, to gain the input of  their peers and access to the instructor during our very brief ~ 4 meeting hours each week.

- Arriving late, leaving to purchase materials or leaving early without permission will be counted as an absence. Please come to class with all necessary materials.

- If you must miss class please email karinhodgin@gmail.com to let me know you will miss.

- I am very reasonable, please communicate with me if you are having difficulties attending class and we can work out  a best course of action for you.

Office hours and Email Policy:

- My office is in Hunt House.  Please do not hesitate to arrange a meeting in person.

- Email is my preferred method of basic communication outside of class. You may email me at any time to ask questions about projects, to let me know of anticipated absences, for clarification on assignments or expectations for this course.

- I will make every reasonable effort to reply to emails within 24 hours.

Special Needs:

If any student has medical difficulties, disabilities, learning disorders, or any other extenuating circumstances that affect your ability to attend or participate in any part of the class, please talk to me immediately. I will work to accommodate your request and to make you feel comfortable in class. I want all students to have an equal opportunity to enjoy and learn from the class information.

It is often necessary to contact Disability services to be able to accommodate students with special needs in class.  If you need assistance getting in touch with their office or have questions about how to proceed, please talk to me immediately after the course begins.
